The development by Grab and Habaich of a headspace analytical technique which organic volatiles are trapped in short capillary traps coated with a layer of fine activated charcoal particles (COTs) or a layer of a suitable stationary phase (FTs), has made it possible to perform headspace analyses on almost any capillary gas chromatograph without having to invest in expensive headspace sampling equipment. In this method the organic material retained on a capillary trap is thermally desorbed in the injector of the gas chromatograph and transported onto the capillary column the carrier gas. A detailed description of the application of this technique to the analysis of air and headspace samples has recently been given by Grob et al. and it has also been used for the GC-MS analysis of plant volatiles. Desorption of thermally labile compounds from activated charcoal traps can also be carried out with a few microliters of a suitable solvent such as, for example, dichloromethane.en_ZA
