Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study examined teenagers' knowledge about HIV and AIDS with a questionnaire, eliciting both quantitative data, which was administered to grade 9 and 10 learners in Mabarhule High School in Mpumalanga. The findings indicated that learners held generally positive knowledge about HIV/AIDS, how it is transmitted and how it can be prevented. Recommendations were made for further studies. The importance of research to determine the role of education in order to determine behaviour change is strongly recommended. Behaviour change is the only real varialbe that can have an immense impact on the prevention of the virus.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die studie was die bepaling van die MIV/vigs – kennis van graad 9 en 10 skoliere van Mabarhule Hoërskool in Mpumalanga. Die resultate van die studie dui daarop dat die skoliere oor die algemeen kennis dra van MIV/vigs, hoe dit oorgedra word en hoe dit voorkom kan word. Voorstelle vir verdere studies word gemaak. Die noodsaaklikheid van die ondersoeke ten einde die rol van opvoeding in uiteindelik gedragsverandering van te stel, word sterk aanbeveel. Gedragsverandering is die enigste werklike veranderlike wat 'n beduidende impak kan hê op die voorkoming van verdere verspreiding van die virus.
