Abstract
ENGLISH SUMMARY: The functioning of the. professional work group at a children's home-school is examined in this study. The therapeutic care of the destitute child at the child care school is very important. Assistance to these children can only be effective within a team approach who develop and maintain a multi-disciplinary service between the children's home and the school. At Children's home X, on which this study is aimed, the professional work group endeavours exactly to render such a multi-disciplinary service to the children. It is very important that the members of the professional work group know how assistance within a multi-disciplinary team approach works. In the literature study the child is described within the unique social context of the children's home, as. well as the influences of the different subsystems, namely the home, school and church. A summary is also given of existing research findings about assistance within a multi-disciplinary .. team relationship as well as the role of subject teams and w9rk groups. The empirical examination is aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the professional work group with relevant examination methods, and to determine which factors. impede upon the effective functioning of the work group. . Two objective questionnaires were used in the study: Questionnaire A to determine the staffs perceptions and experience of the group, and Questionnaire B to examine the internal functioning of the group. Three research groups were used, namely: - All the members of the professional work group (N=14) A random sample consisting of - Twenty members of the teaching staff - Twenty house parents The most important findings include the following: VB - The professional work group has the potential to develop into a very good team, and most of the respondents feel positive towards it. - There is a degree of confusion amongst the house parents and teachers as to what the precise function of the work group is. - The children's home and the school do not always function sufficiently as a unit. - The house parents and teachers feel that they should .be more involved in the activities of the professional work group. - There is a lack of communication between the staff and the professional work group as well as amongst the members of the professional work group. - The staff and the members of the professional work group have a need for in-service training concerning working with the destitute child. - The disposition of the professional work group towards the rest of the staff and amongst each. other is not as desired.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die funksionering van die vakkundige werkgroep aan 'n kinderhuisskool is in hierdie studie ondersoek Die terapeutiese versorging van die sorgbehoewendekind in die kindersorgskool is baie belangrik Hulpverlening aan hierdie kinders kan slegs effektief geskied binne 'n spanbenadering wat 'n multidissiplinere diens tussen kinderhuisen skool ontwikkel en in stand hou. Te Kinderhuis X, waarop die studie gerig is, poog die vakkundige werkgroep juis om so 'n multidissiplinere diens aan die kinders te lewer. Dit is vir die lede van die vakkundige werkgroep van groot belang om te weet hoe hulpverlening binne multidissiplinere spanverband geskied. In die literatuurstudie is die kind binne die eiesoortige sosiale konteks van die kinderhuis beskryf, asook die invloed van die verskillende subsisteme, naamlik die huis, skool en kerk 'n Oorsig is ook gegee van bestaande navorsingsbevindinge oor hulpverlening binne 'n multidissiplinere spanverband, asook die rol van vakspanne en werkgroepe. Die empiriese ondersoek is daarop gerig om die effektiwiteit van die vakkundige werkgroep deur middel van gepaste ondersoekinstrumente te ondersoek, en om vas te stel watter faktore stremmend inwerk opdie effektiewe funksionering van die werkgroep. Twee objektiewe vraelyste is in die ondersoek gebruik: Vraelys A om die personeeIIede se sienswyses en belewing van die vakkundige werkgroep te ondersoek, en VraelysB om die interne werkswyse van die werkgroep te ondersoek. Drie ondersoekgroepe is gebruik, naamlik : - Ai die lede van die vakkundige werkgroep (N=14) 'n Ewekansige steekproef van: - Twintig onderwyspersoneellede - Twintig huisouers Van die belangrikste bevindinge wat uit die ondersoek geblyk het, is die volgende: - Die vakkundige werkgroep het die potensiaal om in 'n baie goeie span te ontwikkel, en die meeste respondente voel positief oor die instelling. - Daar heers 'n mate van verwarring onder die huisouers en onderwysers oor wardie presiese funksie van die vakkundige werkgtoep is. - Die kinderhuis en die skool funksioneer nie altyd voldoende as 'n eenheid nie. As gevolg hiervan funksioneer die vakkundige werkgroep nie effektief nie. - Die huisouers en onderwysers voel dat hulle meer by die werksaarnhede van die vakkundige weikgroep betrek wil word. - Daar heers 'n gebrek aan kommunikasie tussen die personeel en die vakkundige werkgroep asook tussen die lede van die vakkundige werkgroep. - Die personeel en die lede van dievakkundige werkgroep het 'n behoefte aan indiensopleiding in die hantering van die sorgbehoewende kind. - Die gesindhede van die vakkundige werkgroep teenoor die res van die personeel, en onder mekaar is nie na wense rue. Belangrike implikasies van die ondersoekbevindinge is aangedui.
