H ABSTRACT: The objective of this retrospective survey of client documentation, was to develop a profile of the stroke clients attending the Bishop Lavis Rehabilitation Centre between 1995 and 1999. Reviewed during the survey, was the medical status of the clients, as well as certain aspects of the rehabilitation process. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) as well as the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) computer programmes. The study sample consisted of 168 clients. A significant finding in the study was that the mean age of the study population was 59 years. Hypertension was the most common risk factor present in this group. There is some indication from the results that approximately half of the clients were not hospitalised post-stroke. A positive finding in the study was that the majority of clients were referred for rehabilitation within 12 weeks post-stroke. Although a team of professionals was available to manage the stroke clients, the services of the dietician and the social worker appear to have been under utilised. An overall improvement in the functional status of the group was noted when comparing the function on admission to that which was recorded at the last treatment session.en_ZA
