Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACTIn the present study the nature of the early care giving experiences and the attachment styles of a group of adolescents in a Children's Home were explored. A literature review has highlighted the need for this combination of factors to be studied. Investigations of high-risk children can be used to further the understanding of attachment and the development of psychopathology. Adolescents (thirteen to eighteen years of age) from a Children's Home in the Western Cape (N — 41) completed the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI). A Biographical Data Questionnaire about the early care experiences of each subject was completed with the help of social workers from the Children's Home. •the results indicated that the subjects experienced abusive and neglecting early care giving experiences, as well as significant parent-child separations. The attachment styles of the subjects were predominantly insecure. which is a possible indication that negative early care giving experiences play a role in rendering attachment less secure. Although the present study has certain limitations, broadly speaking the results of this study confirms the presence of maladaptive parent-child bonding and negative early care giving experiences amongst adolescents with insecure attachment styles. Further elaboration of this relationship would contribute to a better understanding of the development of attachment.
