Abstract
One-tenth scale models simulating the behavior of strips of a proposed specially treated concrete road pavement over a sinkhole reasonably substantiated the proposed design. The prototype comprised a rebar mesh fixed on top of used mine hoist ropes laid at one metre centers in the slab in the longitudinal direction. These continuous ropes were anchored at 10 m centers to one metre deep reinforced concrete beams sunk into the subgrade at right angles to the road center line and cast monolithicly with the slab. The model test was performed in a 6. 0 multiplied by 1. 5 multiplied by 0. 7 deep brickwalled tank partially filled with a compacted clayey soil. A sinkhole was formed by removing a metre length of fill through a side wall of the tank.
