Abstract
A number of plane strain finite element analyses were performed on a somewhat simplified structure-foundation combination, each analysis investigating a possible solution to the problem. The first analysis, that of the embankment on its foundation, proved that minimum principal stress values close to zero could be expected next to one of the contacts. Because this, and the large zones of possible hydraulic fracturing which also showed up, was undesirable, a second analysis was performed, this time using improved foundation properties.
