Abstract
For the first time the utility of p-sulfonatocalix[8]arene to form a chalice-like cavity for the solid state inclusion of a classical coordination complex [Co(phen)3]3+ has been demonstrated. In the presence of Yb3+ ions, a new crystalline material is formed which possesses large diameter, negatively charged channels which propagate through the material in three dimensions. © the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique 2006.
