Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The shift away from the emotionally detached, authoritarian father to the more involved and emotionally nurturing father has resulted in fathers experiencing greater levels of closeness with their children, and are reportedly more satisfied with these relationships. Furthermore, emotionally involved fathers have proven to positively contribute to the holistic development of children. Consequently, closeness is now included in prominent fatherhood models and encouraged in many communities. However, the definition of closeness in parent-adolescent child relationships remains quite opaque. Furthermore, most research has been done in the northern hemisphere on White, middle-class fathers and their relationships with younger children. Further research is, therefore, needed to explore constructions, experiences, and practices of closeness in the father-child relationship in diverse populations and contexts, specifically in the under-researched area of father-adolescent daughter relationships. Against this backdrop, as well as the scarcity of research conducted on fatherhood in low-income South African communities, especially on fathers and adolescent daughters, this study sought to explore closeness between fathers and adolescent daughters living in low-income communities in the Western Cape, South Africa. To investigate this phenomenon, semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted on fifteen family units. Each family unit consisted of an adolescent female aged 15-17, as well as their father/father figure and mother/mother figure. The study is grounded in social constructionism and the purpose of the interviews was to explore the participants construction and experience of closeness, in the father-adolescent daughter relationships. These interviews were analysed according to Braun and Clark’s Thematic Analysis Method. The analysis produced two overarching themes. The first theme highlights that the participants associated father-daughter closeness with daughters’ comfortability to share personal information with fathers, but that most of the daughters in this study did not feel comfortable to do so. The second theme foregrounds the barriers to greater closeness in father-daughter relationships. Mainstream fatherhood constructions seem to underpin these barriers and should, therefore, be challenged in order to facilitate greater closeness in father-adolescent daughter relationships. These should also form part of future interventions in the communities of study.
