Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study foregrounds the important role of home-school collaboration. Collaboration between the parental home and the school has been researced and debated for many years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic challenged the relevance and effectiveness of all existing teaching and support practices in schools. The aim of this study was to analyse and describe foundation phase teachers’ experience of collaboration between the school and home in a specific full-service school during the pandemic. This investigation involves a qualitative case study of limited scope. The theoretical framework for the study is the bio-ecological model of Urie Bronfenbrenner. With this framework in mind, the individual was considered part of a system and the proximal processes during the COVID-19-pandemic are analysed. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews involving five participants. The themes were constructed by thematic processing of the datasets. The findings of the study indicate that the value of parent and school collaboration cannot be underestimated. Parents and teachers form a partnership without which the teaching and learning process is complicated. Due to contextual factors that were discussed in detail, there was little contact and collaboration between the school and parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research study refers to Inclusive Education as a concept where all learners should experience inclusion to make teaching and learning accessible. Parents should be included as partners in the teaching and learning process to realise collaboration. This, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, places demands on both teachers and parents. This study highlights the barriers to collaboration in the specific context, but also draws attention to the positive and functioning collaboration that does take place and adds value to teachers' experience. A variety of strategies to cultivate teacher-parent collaboration are explored in the study. Good communication and use of different platforms, such as WhatsApp and Facebook indicate that the interaction between the parents and the teacher influences the child to a great extent.
