Abstract
This paper investigates the influence of terrain, morphology and agricultural practices on Landsat identification of vineyards in the Southwestern Cape. Fourteen vineyard subclasses are identified by means of an unsupervised maximum-likelihood classification and then mapped in relation to a Stellenbosch sub-image. Quantitative and visual comparisons between this sub-image and a detailed vineyard map (based on an analysis of aerial photographs) of the same area led to the rejection of nine vineyard subclasses. The final classification based on the five remaining subclasses has a 78% correspondance with the reference map. -from English summary
