Abstract
The temporal nature of Transvsaal hailfall is examined for the period 1960 to 1986. Aspects investigated include the diurnal, seasonal and annual hail day patterns and their variations over space. Although the general diurnal and seasonal patterns are similar to those occurring in the summer rainfall region of South Africa as a whole, some significant differences have been identified. These differences do, in part, correspond to Canadian and Nigerian hail incidence patterns. Analysis of annual hail day fequency time series indicates the presence of extended periods of above and below normal hail day frequency which appear to be inversely related to rainfall periodicity in the area. -Author
