- ItemPro-poor value chains for small scale farming innovation : sustainability improvements through ICT(Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering, 2019-12-12) Matsenjwa, Bongekile; Grobbelaar, Sara; Meyer, Isabel A.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The success of small-scale farmers in pro-poor value chains is constrained by aspects related to government policies, research and training, community issues, and the quality of existing information and communication technology (ICT) tools. This article discusses effective strategies to increase the access to and adoption of ICT by small-scale farmers. Based on a literature review and an expert opinion survey, it identifies and assesses the key factors that facilitate increased ICT access and adoption. Investment in the development of ICT for rural small-scale farmer development is needed, to customise farming ICT to be user-friendly, and to conduct research on the use of simpler but more appropriate technologies to facilitate ICT adoption and use for value chain development.
- ItemThe process of intra-firm technology transfer : a case study of a marine mining company(Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering, 2018) Behane, Thami; Grobbelaar, SaraTechnology transfer is an important function in the technology development cycle, and organisations can benefit extensively if a competent technology strategy is developed and implemented. The objective of this paper is to examine the approaches, processes, mechanism, barriers, and other aspects of intra-firm technology between two subsidiaries of a marine mining company. Subsidiary A of the marine mining company is primarily reliant on research and development as a key driver of technology development and continuous business improvement; an optimal technology transfer process is thus crucial. Using a case study methodology, the analysis sheds light on the current process to transfer technology, and major barriers to and elements of success.
- ItemThe role of open innovation intermediaries in entrepreneurial ecosystems design(Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering, 2017) Ngongoni, Chipo Nancy; Grobbelaar, Sara; Schutte, CorneliusENGLISH ABSTRACT: Unemployment levels in South Africa have reached astronomical levels. This has spurred the government to fund entrepreneurship initiatives such as the Enterprise and Supplier Development programmes. Thus it is vital to enable and create entrepreneurial ecosystems that attract, cultivate, and sustain entrepreneurs. This paper explores how entrepreneurial firms use external actors for value creation in an entrepreneurial ecosystem through intermediaries. The focus is on how an intermediary organisation can facilitate value co-creation. The authors present the results and findings from a case study of the Oslo Cancer Cluster incubator in Norway, and relate these findings to ecosystems management and design.
- ItemTowards a framework to guide the evaluation of inclusive innovation systems(Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering, 2016) Botha, Louisa; Grobbelaar, Sara; Bam, WouterENGLISH ABSTRACT: Innovation for inclusive development aims not only to produce products and services for ‘base of the pyramid’ (BoP) markets, but also to improve innovative capacity and empower those that form part of the BoP. Although a wide range of actors aim to support innovation for inclusive development, they lack proper methods to assess the impact that these projects have. This paper sets out to identify an appropriate method or approach for evaluating systems change brought about by innovation for inclusive development projects. Based on a systematic literature review, a process-level approach is proposed. This approach is focused on the components within a system and the changes that occur in the system functions.
