Exploring solutions for the implementation of remote learning in South Africa as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020. This study explored innovative solutions for implementing remote learning in South Africa due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown restrictions forced schools to adopt remote learning. The aim of this study was to determine (1)how the drastic shift from face-to-face learning to remote learning was dealt with by teachers, (2) the advantages and disadvantages of remote learning, (3) what remote learning revealed about the daily challenges teachers and learners in rural areas must face, (4) which solutions schools and teachers produced to continue teaching and learning without the necessary resources to implement remote learning and (5) how social media could assist in reaching a wider audience to improve remote teaching and learning. This study made use of a critical review of existing literature that focuses on remote learning in a South African Covid-19 context. Economic, social, political and environmental transformation has always been one of South Africa’s greatest challenges, and the Covid-19 situation emphasised this reality. Inequality in education is still a reality in a democratic South Africa. This is clearly visible in the decision-making process when remote learning was implemented as a solution to combat the disruption of Covid-19 to education. Any solutions implemented to limit the effects of Covid-19 on education mostly offered support to privileged learners. Teachers and learners in rural and less-privileged areas were left behind due to a lack of resources, Internet connection, digital devices and assistance from parents or guardians. The literature review showed that there is value in using web applications to enrich the educational process if Internet connections are available and stable. Social media apps such as Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and TikTok enabled teachers to think outside the box and open new communication channels to learners during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the digital age, learners are already informally using social media as an educational resource and the implication of this study is that with proper planning and resource distribution, the Department of Basic Education would be able to enrich teaching and learning in South Africa to enable quality education.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Covid-19 is op 11 Maart 2020 deur die Wêreldgesondheidsorganisasie as ʼn wêreldwye pandemie verklaar. Hierdie studie het ondersoek ingestel na innoverende oplossings vir die implementering van afstandsonderrig in Suid-Afrika as gevolg van die Covid-19-pandemie. Die Covid-19-pandemie en die gevolglike inperkings het skole genoop om van afstandsonderrig gebruik te maak. Die doel van hierdie studie was om vas te stel (1) hoe die drastiese verskuiwing van direkte onderrig na afstandsonderrig deur onderwysers hanteer is, (2) die voor- en nadele van afstandsonderrig, (3) wat afstandsonderrig na vore gebring het rakende die daaglikse uitdagings wat onderwysers en leerders in landelike gebiede moet trotseer, (4) watter oplossings skole en onderwysers geskep het om onderrig en leer voort te sit sonder die nodige hulpbronne om afstandsonderrig te implementeer en (5) hoe sosiale media kan help om ʼn breër gehoor te bereik om afstandsonderrig en -leer te verbeter. In hierdie studie is ʼn kritiese oorsig gedoen van bestaande literatuur wat fokus op afstandsonderrig in ʼn Suid-Afrikaanse Covid-19-konteks. Ekonomiese, sosiale, politieke en omgewingstransformasie was nog altyd een van Suid-Afrika se grootste uitdagings, en die Covid-19-pandemie het hierdie werklikheid beklemtoon. Ongelykheid in onderwys is steeds ʼn werklikheid in ’n demokratiese Suid-Afrika. Dít is duidelik sigbaar in die besluitnemingsproses toe afstandsonderrig geïmplementeer is as ʼn oplossing om die ontwrigting van Covid-19 op onderwys die hoof te bied. Enige oplossings wat geïmplementeer is om die uitwerking van Covid-19 op onderwys te beperk, het meestal ondersteuning aan bevoorregte leerders gebied. Onderwysers en leerders in landelike en minderbevoorregte gebiede is meestal agterweë gelaat weens ʼn gebrek aan hulpbronne, Internetverbinding, digitale toestelle en bystand van ouers of voogde. Die literatuuroorsig het getoon dat daar waarde daarin is om webtoepassings te gebruik om die opvoedkundige proses te verryk indien Internetverbindings beskikbaar en stabiel is. Sosialemedia-toepassings soos Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp en TikTok het onderwysers in staat gestel om innoverend te werk te gaan en nuwe kommunikasiekanale vir hul leerders tydens die Covid-19-pandemie te bied. In die digitale era gebruik leerders reeds sosiale media op ʼn informele wyse as ʼn opvoedkundige hulpbron en die implikasie van hierdie studie is dat die Departement van Basiese Onderwys met behoorlike beplanning en hulpbrontoekenning in staat sal wees om leerders in Suid-Afrika van gehalte onderrig te voorsien.
