Abstract
Despite the diversity found in family structures, the family's value for the well-being of the individual and society is generally recognised. Recent social welfare policy, especially regarding child and youth care, confirms the importance of primary preventative strategies aimed at preserving and building the capacity of the family. A prerequisite for goal-directed, secondary preventative services, is a thorough and comprehensive assessment. Unfortunately this is not often done, as proven by research conducted in the Western Cape. Social workers need to take cognisance of the importance of assessment in order to ensure validated intervention, especially when substitute care of a child is considered.
