The 8th International Workshop on Finite Elements for Microwave Engineering was held on 25-26 May 2006 at Stellenbosch, South Africa. The event drew delegates from the USA, Germany, South Africa, the UK, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Russia and Sweden. The workshop provided an excellent overview of the current state-of-the-art in finite-element research and applications of radio frequency (RF) and microwave frequencies. Several sessions were held with the following titles: (1) FEM Applications: Antennas and Materials: Parts 1 and 2; (2) FEM Applications: Waveguides, Components, Active Devices, Lumped Elements; (3) Multi-Grid and Domain Decomposition Methods: Part 1 and 2; (4) Adaptive Methods; (5) Advances in Absorbing and Periodic Boundary Conditions; (6) Advances in Discrete Representations: (7) Advances in FEM Formulations and Solvers; (8) Special Session in Honor of P. P. Silvester; (9) Time-Domain FEM: Parts 1 and 2; (10) Hybrid Methods; and (11) Optimization Techniques, Parameter Sweep Space: Parts 1 and 2.
