dc.description.abstractThis paper considers the solid-state transformer concept as a viable alternative to the line frequency transformer in distribution circuits. The benefits of the concept are presented in terms of improvements to problem areas currently experienced on distribution networks as well as envisaged future or fringe benefits. Some barriers to universal acceptance of the concept are also identified, with the effects of these barriers analysed and discussed below.
