Die gebruik van Afrikaanse verhalende lektuur ter ondersteuning van die aanbieding van geslags- en gesinsvoorligting in Kaaplandse hoërskole

Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: One of the developmental tasks underlying the adolescent's growth to maturity, is the determination of sensible sexual attitudes and habits, as well as the ability to express sexual needs in a socially acceptable way. It is widely accepted that sex education plays an important role in this regard, especially in view of the sharp increase in sexual activity and attendant problems among today's youth. In this thesis an investigation was conducted into the representation of the adolescent's sexuality in Afrikaans youth literature, to complement the sex education component in family planning programmes in secondary schools in the Western Cape. The proposed didactic method, namely the use of narrative youth literature in the presentation of family planning programmes is based on the recognition that literature can have therapeutic value for the reader. Firstly, a thesaurus of selected terms was compiled after an analysis of the contents of family planning programmes in schools of the Provincial Administration of the Cape of Good Hope's Department of Education and in schools of the Administration: Council of Representatives' Department of Education and Culture. Themes in youth literature were evaluated against the thesaurus in order to determine their suitability for use in family planning programmes. Forty one Afrikaans stories were subsequently selected after further evaluation against criteria which have to be met by contemporary youth literature. After a survey of schools in the Western Cape, it is concluded that sex education programmes are implemented in only a few schools, and even where such programmes are implemented the content and presentation of the programmes were also found to be inadequate. After attending a number of sex education classes in several schools, it also appears as if reading therapy is not used to a significant extent as a didactic method in family planning and sex education programmes and that pupils are consequently also unable to take advantage of its benefits. A final conclusion is that there is too little Afrikaans youth literature with teenager sexuality as main theme. The vast majority of youth literature present teen sex with its attendant problems, as well as teen relationships with the opposite sex as incidental affairs only.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Een van die ontwikkelingstake onderliggend tot die adolessent se groei tot volwassenheid is die vasstelling van gesonde seksuele houdings en gebruike, asook die vermoë om seksuele behoeftes op 'n sosiaal aanvaarbare wyse uit te leef. Dit word algemeen aanvaar dat geslagsvoorligting 'n belangrike rol speel in die verband, veral gesien in die lig van die skerp toename in seksuele aktiwiteit onder die hedendaagse jeug en die daarmee gepaardgaande probleme. In hierdie verhandeling is 'n ondersoek gedoen na die uitbeelding van die adolessent se seksualiteit of geslagslewe in Afrikaanse verhalende lektuur, ten einde te dien as aanvulling tot die geslagsvoorligtingkomponent in gesinsvoorligtingprogramme in Kaaplandse Hoërskole. Die didaktiese metode wat hier voorgestel word, naamlik die gebruik van verhalende lektuur in die aanbieding van gesinsvoorligtingprogramme berus op die aanname dat die lees van lektuur terapeutiese waarde vir die leser kan inhou. Ten eerste is 'n tesourus van geselekteerde terme saamgestel na fasetontleding van gesinsvoorligtingleerplanne in skole van die Provinsiale Administrasie van die Kaap die Goeie Hoop se Departement van Onderwys en in skole van die Administrasie: Raad van Verteenwoordigers se Departement van Onderwys en Kultuur. Temas in jeugverhale is teen die tesourus geëvalueer om hul geskiktheid vir gebruik in 'n gesinsvoorligtingprogram te bepaal. Een en veertig Afrikaanse jeugverhale is vervolgens geselekteer na 'n verdere evaluasie teen kriteria waaraan die hedendaagse jeugverhaal moet voldoen. Na 'n opname onder skole is bevind dat geslagsvoorligtingprogramme in weinig hoërskole in Wes-Kaapland aangebied word, en in gevalle waar daar wel sulke programme bestaan, die inhoud en wyse van aanbieding ontoereikend is. Na die bywoning van 'n aantal geslagsvoorligtingperiodes in verskeie skole, wil dit ook voorkom asof leesterapie as didaktiese metode nie beduidend in gesins- en geslagsvoorligtingprogramme gebruik word nie, en dat die voordele van leesterapie dus nie aan leerlinge beskikbaar gestel word nie. 'n Laaste bevinding wat na afloop van die ondersoek gemaak is, is dat daar nie genoegsame Afrikaanse verhalende lektuur bestaan wat tienerseksualiteit as hooftema het nie. Die oorgrote meerderheid verhale bied tienerseksualiteit met die gepaardgaande probleme, asook tienerverhoudings met die teenoorgestelde geslag slegs as randgebiede aan.
