Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nature as we know it has got two sides, a positive and negative sector. Each sector has its own special characteristics (where urban decline is an example of the negative side and urban renewal is an example of the positive side). One of the special characteristics of the negative side is that is shows progression. If one of its micro-level factors has gone bad it will influence the whole environment negatively, hence collapse will be inevitable. The positive sector on the other hand does not show such progression. If one of its micro-level factors is enhanced, it will not automatically have a positive influence on the other micro-level factors and hence the whole macro-level environment. Equilibrium would thus not be created automatically. Within this positive sector it will always be an upward battle and a catalyst is needed to enhance the positive effects of the one micro-level factor within respect to the others. It is within this context then that we see the relevance of the concept integration and holism, which can be used, as catalysts. Every micro-level factor should be seen as part of the whole system and be integrated with the other in order to create a whole framework within which boundaries the problem should be solved in order to create a new equilibrium. This is shown in the diagram. While in the negative sector the micro-level factors create momentum on their own and start to "snowball", the micro-level factors on the positive side need something to help it get on its way (Figure).
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Natuur bestaan uit positiewe en negatiewe sektore. Hierdie sektore toon verskillende eienskappe (waar verval 'n voorbeeld van die negatiewe is en hernuwing 'n voorbeeld van die positiewe). Die negatiewe sektor toon 'n mate van progressie. As die een mikrovlak faktor sleg/verkeerd is, kan dit die hele makrovlak op sy kniee dwing en gevolglik 'n sisteem uit sy ekwilibrium dwing. Hierdie tipe van progressie kom egter nie by die positiewe sektor voor nie. As die een mikrovlak faktor opgehef of nuut ingestel is, sal dit nie tot 'n outomatiese oplewing in die ander mikrovlak faktore en die gevolglike herstel van 'n ekwilibrium binne die hele sisteem lei nie. Hierdie is 'n opdraande stryd en 'n katalis is nodig vir die proses om verder te gaan. Dit is nou juis vir die doel dat die begrippe van holisme en integrasie belangrik is en kan dien as katalis vir die bereiking van die uiteindelike doelwit. Elke mikrovlak faktor moet as deel van die hele sisteem benader word en gevolglik binne 'n ge·integreerde raamwerk gesien word voordat daar gese kan word dat die sisteem se ekwilibrium herstel is. Dit word in die figuur aangedui. Terwyl die mikrovlak faktore in die negatiewe sektor momentum opbou en 'n "sneeubal-effek" aan die gang sit, het hulle in die positiewe sektor 'n katalis nodig om hulle aan die gang te kry (Figuur).
