Abstract
It is believed that mass transfer in modern structured packing is not analogous to mass transfer in long wetted-wall columns used previously in mass-transfer studies. To model mass transfer in structured packing, gas-phase mass-transfer coefficients were measured by evaporation in a short wetted-wall column with a length of 110 mm and a diameter of 25.4 mm. The results were correlated as Shg = 0.00283RegScg0.5Rel0.08. This correlation is based on the evaporation data of six low-viscosity pure liquids covering a wide range of surface tensions. In the case of a high-viscosity liquid such as ethylene glycol, systematic deviation from this correlation was observed.
