Abstract
The oldest gravels found on a Mid-Pliocene palaeosurface about 55 m above river bed (a.r.b.) probably relate to early tributary courses. The main sequence of gravels bordering the Eerste River consists of an Older group in the range 37-12 m a.r.b. and a Younger group at about 8-6 m a.r.b.. The development of primitive drainage systems in the southwestern Cape is briefly discussed and the suggestion made that the Eerste River captured a postulated northwest-flowing proto-Jonkershoek River during the major Oligocene regression. -from Author
