- ItemAutomated synthesis, placement and routing of large-scale RSFQ integrated circuits(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2021-03) De Villiers, Jude; Fourie, Coenrad; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dissertation presents the development and implementation of an automated synthesistool for the synthesis of Rapid Single Flux Quanta (RSFQ) logic circuits from a high-leveldescription of a circuit. With today’s excessive demand for high-performance computation, the current complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits already at itspinnacle does not deliver on present requirements, therefore a new form of integratedcircuits will be highly-priced. RSFQ logic circuits may be a solution with new interest andfunding it may become a reality in the future. The developed synthesis tool, ViPeR cancreate a 4-bit adder circuit that can operate at 35GHz. Further development to improvethe tool and processes seems possible. ViPeR consists of a subset of tools, each with aunique purpose in synthesising the RSFQ circuit. The primary challenges were to balancethe logic gate with delay flip-flops (DFFs), generating an optimal layout for the logic gatesand finally to integrate a clock distribution network into the circuit. Two other toolswere also created to aid in the verification and final chip generation of the circuit, namelyDie2Sim and chipSmith. The synthesised circuits are evaluated and compared to existingcircuits, paving the way for future development
