Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. An individual's ability to survive and flourish is inhibited by elements of chronic unemployment and rapid change due to progress and pressure to function above average in all facets of living. In spite of above elements the business sector needs a labour market who can survive and flourish. Individuals who are competent in the basic and relevant lifeskills will be able to survive and flourish in their personal-, social- and work environment. Lifeskills are the skills and competencies which an individual needs to cope. Presently, employees in the business sector lack the skills they need to cope with the demands of change. This places the responsibility on schools, the community and employers to equip individuals with the necessary lifeskills. Companies making use of lifeskill training programmes will be ensured of a productive and adaptive workforce. There is a substantial lack of research on lifeskills due to the fact that the concept is still unknown to the business sector. The purpose of this study is therefore to determine, through exploratory research, the nature and extent of the lack of lifeskills, as experienced by employers and employees.
