dc.description.abstractENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis various analytical models simulating direct contact counterflow air coolers and cooling towers have been developed. These models range from the simplified model based on the work by Merkel [26ME1] to the more comprehensive model based on the work by Poppe [84PO1]. Computer programs have been written to predict the performance as well as the outlet air and water conditions of bulk air coolers and cooling towers. Tests have been conducted on a direct contact counterflow tower operating in the air cooler and cooling tower mode to determine the transfer characteristic of splash and film type fill material. The temperature dependency of the transfer characteristic is examined and transfer characteristic correlations taking the temperature influence into account are presented. The droplet mass flow rate in the outlet air has been measured to determine the amount of drift and fog leaving a bulk air cooler. A simple correlation predicting the droplet mass flow rate below the drift eliminators is presented. It is concluded that the large amounts of water found in the outlet air of some bulk air coolers is mainly due to droplet carry-over rather that recondensation of moisture.en_ZA
dc.description.abstractAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In heirdie tesis is verskillende analitiese modelle ontwikkel wat die werking van direkte kontak teenvloei lugverkoelers en koeltorings simuleer. Hierdie modelle strek vanaf die eenvoudige model gebaseer op die werk van Merkel [26ME1] tot die meer uitgebreide model gebaseer op die werk van Poppe [84PO1]. Verskye rekenaar programme is geskryf om die werkverrigting en die lug en water uitlaattoestande van lugverkoelers en koeltorings te voorspel. Eksperimente is op 'n direkte kontak teenvloei toring uitgevoer wat in beide die lugverkoeler en koeltoring mode bedryf word ten einde die oordragskarakteristieke van die spat- en film-tipe pakking te bepaal. Die temperatuurafhanklikheid van die oordragskarakteristieke is ondersoek en korrelasies van laasgenoemde wat die tempertatuurafhanklikheid in ag neem is voorgestel. Die druppel-massavloeitempo in die uitlaatlug is gemeet om die hoeveelheid sproeidruppels en herkondensasiedruppels wat 'n lugverkoeler verlaat te bepaal. verder word 'n eenvoudige korrelasie voorgestel wat die druppelmassavloeitempo onder die druppelskeiers voorspel. Die gevolgtrekking word gemaak dat die groot hoeveelhede water wat in die uitlaatlug van somminge lugverkoelers teenwoordig is, hoofsaaklik aan die sproeidruppel-oordrag eerder as herkondensasie van vog te wyte is.af_ZA
