The manifestation of distinct spatial distribution patterns of mental illness and the influence of personal and environmental factors on the incidence of mental illness in an urban environment form the focus of this study. The cases of 4406 mentally ill Whites in Cape Town, studied within an ecological and individual framework, showed a higher concentration of mental illness in the northern suburbs than in the southern suburbs, but no distinct distance decay in the incidence of mental illness from the central city outwards. Survey results indicate that housing and residential features are perceived as the least important causes of mental illness, while traumatic experience is perceived to be the major cause. -from Author
