The measured breakdown voltage of an etched shielded microstrip (SMS) line with a thin strip is much higher than that predicted for strips with rounded edges. Low frequency measurements to determine the onset of Trichel pulses can be used to determine the voltage rating of SMS lines at microwave frequencies. Breakdown voltages do not scale linearly with line dimensions and can be predicted with a simple model.
