Explicit expressions for the P-wave neutron strength function Γn(1) D are derived from a complex optical model potential consisting of a rounded real potential well, an imaginary part describing both volume and surface absorption, and a real spin-orbit term. Comparison with recent experimental data of Γn(1) D permits, inter alia, a fairly unambiguous estimate of the strength of spin-orbit coupling in the intermediate energy region. © 1962.
