dc.description.abstractPhylogenetic analysis based on the molecular structure of viruses suggests that there has been multiple transmission of so-called simian immunodeficiency viruses from African primates to human beings, giving rise to both HIV-1 and HIV-2. Doubt remains about when and how the AIDS pandemic began.
