Abstract
Efficiency is an important measure to determine to what extent government achieved its goals. In this thesis various definitions of efficiency are discussed, the relationship between efficiency and performance, as well as performance measurement techniques. The objective of this document is to analyse the following four subject matters:- 􀁸 What is meant by “efficiency” in the public sector. For the purpose of this discussion the definition of Gershon in his report for the British Treasury (2004: 6) is accepted and adapted. 􀁸 To learn about the different techniques in performance measurement available to measure efficiency or performance. The measurement of performance is mostly used to determine the level of efficiency.
