Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The real-time monitoring and collection of agricultural sensor data have been a challenge faced by farmers around the world. This thesis explores the design of a system to make the collecting and viewing of this vineyard telemetry data easy and robust. An Ad-Hoc Wireless Sensor Network was designed and built to collect data specifically from vineyard based environments, and transmit the data from the network to a database and dashboard where it can be analysed and viewed by the farmer. The network uses a mesh networking protocol to extend the range of the network beyond the range of a single node-node link. A network protocol based on AODV was developed to handle the routing of information within the WSN. Alongside the physical nodes, an algorithm was designed to aid in the optimal placement of gateway nodes within an existing network, as well as the optimal placement of all nodes given the practical considerations that need to be taken into account when installing nodes in the real-world environments.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die versameling van data vanaf wingerde is ’n probleem waarmee boere al lank sukkel. Hierdie Tesis ondersoek die ontwerp van ’n stelsel om hierdie versameling van telemetrie data eenvoudiger en meer betroubaar te maak. ’n Ad-Hoc Draadlose Sensor Netwerk is ontwikkel om hierdie data te versamel en na ’n databasis te stuur waar dit geanaliseer kan word deur die boer. Die stelsel gebruik ’n roosternetwerk protokol om die maksimum kommunikasie afstand te vermeerder, bo die maksimum kommunikasie afstand tussen twee enkele nodes. Die netwerk protokol wat ontwikkel is, is op AODV gebaseer. Die protokol verwerk al die roete informasie binne die netwerk om telemetrie data tussen die nodes deur te stuur tot by die databasis. Benewens die fisiese ontwerp en bou van die netwerk stelsel, is ’n algoritme ontwikkel om die plasing van poort nodes binne ’n bevestigde netwerk te optimaliseer, asook die plasing van alle nodes binne ’n wingerd nadat alle praktiese oorwegings in ag geneem is.
