Within a very short period of time, the controversial Sport Science article drew intense reaction from senior researchers and executive management at Stellenbosch University, much more than protesting students have been able to evoke at historically white South African universities. While scholars and leaders on campus reacted quickly, it is doubtful whether any of the coloured1 women who participated in the Sport Science study would have read the contentious article that appeared in an international online journal.
