Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Wine cellars, just like other organisations, constantly strive to deliver products of high quality, in addition to being more productive, cost-efficient and competitive. The latter can lead to continuous changes in the workplace to ensure profitability which in turn could result in more pressure for both the organisations and workers. Workers can subsequently experience more work-related stress which could lead to lowered performance levels. Family life could also place additional strain on workers. In order to maintain a balance between the work-related challenges and challenges posed through family life remains a source of tension for many workers that influences their social interactions in a negative manner. If wine cellars want to remain competitive, it is imperative that the general well-being of workers be prioritised. The aim of this study is to identify and understand the needs, challenges and stress-triggers that impact the social interaction of workers that are employed on the production side of wine cellars to establish whether employee assistance programmes will be effective in addressing these issues. This study has taken a qualitative and quantitative research approach. A descriptive and exploratory research design was used, specifically because literature about employee assistance programmes within the wine cellar context were not readily available. A purposive sample of participants was used and consisted of sixteen (n=16) wine cellar production workers. Data was collected by means of a semi-structured interview schedule where individual interviews with participants were administered. The most prominent finding and conclusion of the study is that wine cellar production workers experience stress in the work place as well as in their family lives. Together these stress factors have a negative influence on both that of the workers' work performance as well as their social interactions. The most important recommendation is that there is a need for wine cellars to implement employee assistance programmes to address the stress levels of workers and also to enhance overall productivity in the workplace. Recommendations for future research projects are also referred to include the need for further research to do a comprehensive needs assessment focussing on the nature and scope of employee assistance programs specifically within the wine cellar context.
