P.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Philosophy.ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study is a re-appreciation of modem artistic practice. The motivation for this is, however, more deep-seated than merely nostalgia for modem art. On the one hand, it is founded in the conviction that the way we construct and appreciate the past fundamentally affects our future and, on the other, it is seated in the belief that there is something seriously wrong with the popular argument that modem artistic practice was totalizing. It is my view that representatives of this argument tend to forget the accomplishments of modem artistic practice. How it created free space for experimental, imaginative, future-orientated dissident metaphoric creation. How it placed emphasis on aesthetic joy, and how it created space for self-development. My primary motivation for a re-appreciation of modem artistic practice was to keep this joyful, detotalizing, metaphoric field open and to open it even further. To accomplish this I had to take the risk of philosophically analysing the argument of whether modem artistic practices had a totalizing social effect or not. A critical study of the philosophical texts of Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Derrida that has as subject art, artistic criticism and the relationship between art and society was undertaken. One of the'ยท leading questions was if and how art fulfils a role in changing perceptions pertaining to truth and meaning. The most important philosophical question was thus the ground, limits and conditions of the claims we make about art, truth and meaning. In an effort to accomplish this, my study worked in the area of the so-called modern/post-modem debate. Here the specific question asked was whether the "post-modem" view that modem art was totalizing and inhibiting is tenable. The most significant conclusion of this study is that art, through the use of metaphor, fulfils a fundamental role in bringing about truth and meaning. What is also of importance, however, is that this metaphorical perspective on art, truth and meaning is in fact an accomplishment of modernity. Contrary to the popular view that modernity held only a totalizing, correspondence view of art, it is thus shown how modernity in fact set forth a metaphorical perspective. From the work done in this thesis, I come to the conclusion that modem artistic practice did not have a totalizing social effect and that it should receive appreciation for the current detotalizing, metaphorical perspective on truth and meaning.
