- ItemHuman tumor microsporidiosis. First reported case(1973) Marcus P.B.; Van Der Walt J.J.; Burger P.J.Infection of human tumor cells by Microsporidia has not been documented to date. A description is given of microsporidian parasites seen as an incidental finding in the cytoplasm of the cells of a widely disseminated pancreatic adenocarcinoma in a 58 yr old man. This previously unreported phenomenon in a human has its counterpart in the well documented parasitism of malignant tumor cells in common laboratory animals by the microsporidian Nosema cuniculi.
- ItemProliferating tricholemmal cysts. A case report(Health & Medical Publishing Group, 1978) Le Roux F.B.; Van Der Walt J.J.Attention is focused on an uncommon, but well-defined clinical and histological entity, which is still often misdiagnosed as a squamous carcinoma. The case described in this article supports the concept that the origin of the cyst is from the outer hair sheath. The importance of some form of irritation which stimulates proliferation of the epithelium is also mentioned.
- ItemProtein synthesis in myocardial ischaemia and infarction(1971) Lochner A.; Brink A.J.; Brink A.; Bester A.J.; Van Der Walt J.J.Protein synthesis, as indicated by the in vitro and in vivo incorporation of isotopic amino acids into myocardial proteins, was determined at various time intervals after ligation of the left coronary artery. The results show that the in vitro incorporation of l-[4,5-3H]leucine and l-[U-14C]lysine into the soluble protein and actomyosin fractions of heart muscle slices was normal up to 6 h after the onset of ischaemia. The rate of amino acid incorporation was significantly higher 12 h after occlusion of the left coronary artery and remained elevated for at least 2 months. After 3 months, the rate of amino acid incorporation into both protein fractions returned to normal. Protein synthesis was elevated in both the uninfarcted and infarcted areas of the myocardium. Studies on the in vivo incorporation of l-[4,5-3H]leucine into total myocardial proteins also showed that protein synthesis was normal up to 6 h after occlusion of the left coronary artery. © 1971.

- ItemThe mid dermis graft. An experimental study(1973) Malherbe W.D.F.; Van Der Walt J.J.It is possible in the baboon and also in the human not only to transplant a thin split thickness graft successfully, but to cut a second layer from the donor area and to transplant this mid dermis graft successfully as well. Within one week a new cover of epidermis regenerates on the mid dermis graft from epithelial elements present in the graft. The donor area still contains sufficient epithelial structures to provide its own epidermal cover. At least two grafts can therefore be taken from the same donor area by means of an electric dermatome without any adverse effect on the healing of the donor area, and both these grafts will 'take'. Clinically this means that the available donor skin can theoretically be doubled. Histologically this graft provides a new method of studying the regeneration of epithelium and the process of distribution of melanin.
