Eenentwintigste-eeuwse receptie van Nederlandse vertalingen van Afrikaanse poezie(Tydskrif vir Letterkunde Association, 2013) T'Sjoen, YvesThe South African poets Ingrid Jonker, Antjie Krog and Ronelda S. Kamfer are part of the literary system of the Low Countries. Their introduction in the Netherlands and Flanders was accomplished by translations into Dutch. An analysis of the role and the image-building of foreign literature in the Dutch-speaking world is important for (the study of) literary historiography. The presence and the reception of the three selected South African poets and their works are documented in this paper. Critics are not only interested in the literary production of national authors but also in the poetry of foreign writers (mainly available through translations). In this way, poets and their works start functioning in the literary poly-system of the Netherlands and Flanders. The manner in which images are created tells us something about the presence of Jonker, Krog and Kamfer in contemporary Dutch literature. Not only are the reactions of readers (or critics) fundamental to the study of literary reception, the way in which these writers and their poetry have gained particular positions in the literary system should also be part of the research. Revealing questions deal with the role played by intermediaries, the selection criteria for poems in anthologies, translation strategies, the promotion by commercial publishers. Foreign literature is interwoven with the poetical discourses of a national literary system. In this respect, the translated poetry by the three selected South African (Afrikaans writing) female authors is part of the borderless (Dutch) literature.
- ItemBreyten Breytenbachs poezie in Raster(Academy of Science of South Africa, 2017) Bourgeus, Camille; T'Sjoen, YvesFrom 1969 until 1972 the South-African writer and graphic artist Breyten Breytenbach published 29 poems, prose texts and three drawings in the Dutch experimental periodical Raster (first edition: 1967). H. C. ten Berge, writer, poet and Raster's main editor, attributed Breytenbach an unusually prominent position in his magazine. In the Dutch language area of the late sixties and early seventies, Breytenbach was mostly known for his political engagement within the anti-apartheid movement. Ten Berge, however, also praised his work for its formal and experimental aesthetic qualities. According to Ten Berge experiment and engagement are related to one another in a very unique way. By examining the position of Breytenbach in Raster, the paper presents a documentation of the exceptional literary relationship between Breytenbach and Ten Berge, as well as their shared interest in certain motifs in poetry, the use of a specific metaphoric language (e.g. perception of nature and body) and a common belief in the power of poetic language.
- ItemCharl-Pierre Naude en Gert Vlok Nel in Nederland en Vlaanderen : laterale transnationale bewegingen van Afrikaanstalige schrijvers naar Nederlands en Engels(Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, 2015-03) T'Sjoen, YvesNEDERLANDSE OPSOMMING: Nederlandse literatuur is méér dan de literatuur die in het Nederlandse taalgebied wordt geproduceerd, gedistribueerd, geconsumeerd en gerecipieerd. Ook anderstalige literaturen, al dan niet in vertaling, functioneren en circuleren in een nationaal literair circuit, in het kritisch repertoire van schrijvers en critici, in een literair discours en in fondsen van uitgevershuizen. Buitenlandse schrijvers en teksten participeren direct of indirect in het gesprek over literatuur. In het literaire veld van Nederland en Vlaanderen zijn al langer Zuid-Afrikaanse auteurs aanwezig. Naast de canonieke stemmen – Breytenbach, Brink, Krog, Van Heerden en Van Niekerk – zijn Afrikaanstalige dichters present op literaire festivals, in kranten, tijdschriften en op internetblogs, in vertaling. Gert Vlok Nel en Charl-Pierre Naudé, debutanten in het midden van de jaren negentig in de Afrikaanse poëzie, zijn beiden naar het Nederlands vertaald. Hoewel Nel vooral een dichterperformer is en Naudé met zijn poëzie minder aanwezig is op de bühne en al helemaal geen muziek gebruikt om zijn gedichten voor een publiek van toehoorders te brengen, vertoont hun schrijversloopbaan een vergelijkbare laterale beweging van het Afrikaans naar het Nederlands of van een “marginale” literatuur naar een middelgrote taal in Europees perspectief. Tegelijk publiceren beiden in het Engels. Met name Naudés zelfvertaling Against the light en enkelevertalingen van Nels gedichten in opdracht van Poetry International Rotterdam kunnen in dat opzicht worden genoemd. Deze auteurs bewegen zich dus evenzeer in een verticale richting naar de metropool van de hedendaagse wereldliteratuur.

Pleidooi voor een wetenschappelijke documentaire varianteneditie van Claus' verzamelde poezie(Academy of Science of South Africa, 2012) T'Sjoen, YvesThe selection of a base text for textual edition is not only a matter of literary-historical data or a consideration based on the genetic process or the publishing history of a work of art. Also the poetics or aesthetics of the editor are in some cases decisive for that (final/fundamental) choice. Depending on the poetical ideas of an editor one or another authorized text is chosen for the final edition. In that way the editor’s choice determines the image of a literary work for a cultural community and does so for several years, if not for ever. In some cases we deal with a variety of text versions in a literary archive. Each of these texts is written from an aesthetic point of view and represents a stage in the development of an author. From that perspective it is not only relevant but also necessary to present all full text versions and for instance not only the variants in a specific apparatus. For my article I want to consider the collected poems by Hugo Claus (1929–2008). Four years after his death it becomes necessary to discuss the way in which scientific editors will present the collected works of the Flemish author. I want to suggest an edition with all complete versions of the poems. Claus was a legendary re-writer of his own (and even other’s) literary texts. For instance, when he presented a new collection of his poems in the sixties and the nineties, he worked on a different version. From this point of view, each version represents another or a slightly different poetical vision by the author. The digital medium can provide an environment to present all full text (versions). Also in a published edition I would like to consider a publication of all different versions. Perhaps we have to make a difference between a scholarly edition, intended for researchers who work on the complete works by Claus, and an edition for an interested public (of non-scholars). Although these readers also deserve a complete works by Claus, including all versions of texts Claus worked on during different periods in his writing career.
- ItemSchrijven na Auschwitz, na apartheid, na de digital turn(University of Pretoria, 2015) T'Sjoen, YvesIn this paper I discuss the concept of "engaged poetry" and the position of poetry with a so-called ethic dimension in the digital era. Taking the famous aphorism by Theodor W. Adorno as a starting point-"Nach Auschwitz ein Gedicht zu schreiben, ist barbarisch" ("After Auschwitz writing poetry is barbaric")-and the two different interpretations of that statement formulated by the philosopher himself, I consider the relevance of the term "engaged literature". I am aware that this article not only summarizes Adorno's points of view, but I also present my own personal poetics as an academic and as a reader of modern poetry. I refer to contemporary poetry of Afrikaans in South Africa and Dutch, more particularly literature in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, to illustrate my point.
