- ItemSocially desirable responding : a cognitive process perspective(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2022-12) Ramos, Matthew; Odendaal, Aletta; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology.ENGLISH SUMMARY: The primary objective of the research was to explore the cognitive processes underlying socially desirable responding, to better understand and describe the processes of how responses are generated and to work towards strategies that can prevent them. Congruous with the research objective, data gathering-techniques incorporated both cognitive and semi-structured interviews. The cognitive interviewing technique enabled the researcher to observe the question-response process and elicited the level of difficulty experienced by the interviewee in the complex 5-stage process established by Ziegler. In addition, the semi-structured interview allowed the researcher to discover recurring and prominent themes in terms of the cognitive processes’ individuals experience whilst responding to items on a self-report inventory. In total, 10 participants were utilised across the two phases of data-collection, and thematic analysis to interpret the data. The findings indicate a 6-step cognitive process which respondents experience when responding to items on a self-report inventory. The conceptual framework further indicates the systemic outline of factors which influence this cognitive process, as well as depicts the interaction between each of these factors. The framework can therefore be utilised to describe the process of how responses are generated as well as assist in the establishment of strategies to prevent socially desirable responding.
