E.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Information Science.ENGLISH SUMMARY: One of the most important functions of the Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute is the provision of an effective information service to the farmers of the Karoo region. Because of existing problems in the traditional information service for farmers, an information bank was created by the Animal Production section to facilitate and expedite information transfer. The purpose of this study was to determine the information needs of the extensive stock farmers of the Karoo region and to define the possible role of the Animal Production Information Bank in satisfying these information needs. The information needs were determined with the aid of a comprehensive postal questionnaire which was sent to 1332 extensive stock farmers in the Karoo region. Data from 563 correctly completed questionnaires were used. After subjecting the Animal Production Information Bank to a set of evaluation criteria, it was concluded that the information bank could play an important role in solving some of the problems experienced with information transfer to farmers. The information needs of the extensive stock farmers of the Karoo region were expressed first in terms of main subjects and then as individual subjects. After comparing the subject scope of the Animal Production Information Bank with the information needs of the stock farmers, deficits in the scope were pointed out. If these deficits in scope could be covered, the . Animal Production Information Bank could play an important role in satisfying the information needs of the Karoo region's extensive stock farmers and in supplying an optimal information service.
