Dept. of Modern Foreign LanguagesENGLISH ABSTRACT : Pham Duy Khiêm, who belonged to the first generation of Vietnamese francophone writers, published Nam et Sylvie in 1957. The novel describes the difficulties that mixed-race couples, especially between Vietnamese men and French women, faced during the colonial period. Christiane Fournier, a French novelist who lived in Indochina in the 1930s, published a novel, entitled Homme jaune et femme blanche (1933), about French-Vietnamese interracial relationships. This thesis explores the circumstances of mixed-race couples, especially as a symbol of social integration in a foreign country, which is interlinked with questions of identity and interculturality. As its point of departure, this study analyses the difference between a Vietnamese francophone perspective and a colonial perspective regarding interracial relationships. In particular, this study investigates the reasons why both novels depict failed relationships and furthermore proposes that the failure of mixed-race relationships is connected to a complex interplay of sexual, racial and legal aspects in the colonial context.
