- ItemDie bydrae van maatskaplike werk ten opsigte van gemeenskapstrawwe(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1991) Howes, M. F. (Marina Francina); Botha, N. J.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the contribution of social work in regard to community sentences. In spite of the statutory availability of community sentence options and a realization of the detrimental effect that imprisonment might have on transgressors, the overcrowding of prisons remains a serious problem. The most important motivation for the study was to investigate the potential contribution of probation officers to the advancement of community sentences. The goal of the study was to evaluate the services rendered by probation officers at criminal courts, in order to assess whether it could contribute to the advancement of community sentences. Evaluative research was accepted as the most appropriate research paradigm. Because the research results should be used to develop and improve existing service programmes, formative evaluative research was used for this study. A mainly qualitative work method was followed. The rationale behind this was that a service programme must be assessed within the total context of the criminal administration of justice; that information had to be extracted from the actors in the program and that new dimensions generated during field work could be verified. Information was collected by way of interviews according to an interview schedule and by way of focus group discussions. Two components are needed in the advancement of community sentences, namely sentencers to sentence and probation officers to render the necessary supportive services to the court. The investigation group consisted therefore of magistrates and probation officers composed through maximal variation sampling. The information that had been collected, was processed as a whole around specific subjects.
- Item'n Huweliksberaadmodel vir huwelike waarin buite-egtelike verhoudings voorkom(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1992) Fourie, David Petrus,1954-; Botha, N. J.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Extra-marital relationships remain one of the prominent reasons for marital problems. Attempting to determine a way in which the marriage counsellor can handle the complexity of marriage problems caused by extra-marital relationships was, accordingly, the major motivation for this study. Although considerable research has already been undertaken concerning the nature and appearance of extra-marital relationships, only a few researchers were found to have attempted the structuring of guidelines for a strategy of marriage counselling for this specific problem. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to develop a relevant model for marriage counselling for marriages in which extra-marital affairs occur. The main objective was to merge all existing social work approaches toward family- and marriage counselling, in order to create a new, integrated model for therapy. With the use of such a model, marital problems could be assessed and an intervention strategy could be drawn up. In order to develop new social work technology for this marriage counselling model, the development model was used as method of research. However, in this study only the first four phases of the development model were utilised, namely analysis of the problem, design, development and evaluation of the theoretical model. The empirical research was limited to the client system and marriage counsellors of FAMSA Western Cape. The selection of the random sample was effected through a deliberate, non-probability process, inasmuch as all cases in which extra-marital relationships were given as the presented problem, were included. The period of the random sample was furthermore restricted to six months. Information was obtained from the client system by means of a file study and a telephonic interview; the last taking place on the basis of a semistructured interviewing schedule. The evaluation phase in the process of research was concluded by involving all the marriage counsellors, by means of group supervision discussions and a structured questionnaire, in the evaluation of FAMSA's existing services, as well as the utilisation value of the newly developed model.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study is directed at the design of a practice model for the purpose of integrating social work research and social work direct practice. The motivation for the study was the increased emphasis on the measurement and evaluation of the effectiveness of direct practice which makes the social worker accountable to clients, organisations and donors. The research was conducted within the conceptual defines of developmental research. The existing state of social technology concerned with the measurement and evaluation of direct practice was undertaken by means of a literature study. In addition to the latter, a quantitative research programme was utilized to acquire information by means of a questionnaire and the implementation of a measurement scale to develop and test the conceptual framework of a practice model. Qualitative research was also utilised to describe the respondents' perceptions regarding the acceptability of the practice model. The research group consisted of practising social workers and final year students in Social Work. The practice model is therefore a product of existing knowledge and innovative effort in social technology. The practice model provides directives for the integration of social work research and social work direct practice with the aid of measuring instruments and evaluation procedures. The probability that the model could be applied within the boundaries of social work practice and social work training is extremely high, since it consists of a scientifically based conceptual framework which has been experimentally tested. The model can therefore be included in the theoretical curriculae and programmes of field instruction of undergraduate students. It can also be included in programmes for continuous education. Practising social workers can apply the practice model for the formulation and evaluation of social welfare programmes. It will also contribute towards the accountability of direct practice to the client system and to improve the quality thereof. The application of the model should ensure to acquire and maintain the support and interest of the public at large and of private donors. It is essential that the practice model should be submitted to tests to determine its effectiveness and to provide for the evaluation and redesign of the model. Further research in this regard is essential to ensure that the application of the practice model is continually investigated.
