- ItemDie Breytie boek : 'n versameling artikels oor Suid-Afrikaanse teater opgedra aan P.P.D. Breytenbach (24th January 1904 - 2nd March 1984)(Limelight press, 1985) Hauptfleisch , TempleTo serve as background for the articles I have included a general chronology on the history of South African theatre (1887-1984) identifying some of the highlights of the period. The book consists of three main sections: First there is a section on Breytie the man: his life, his personality and his contribution. This is followed by one on the history of the theatre in the country, mainly as fas as Breytie was directly or indirectly involved in it. This includes some items on the industry today (the performing arts councils, organizations and service institutions) as well as an overview of trends in the 80's. The third section contains personal tributes to P. P. B. Breytenbach by his friends and colleagues over the years.
- ItemA century of Geography at Stellenbosch University 1920 –2020(African Sun Media, 2020) Visser, Gustav; De Waal, JanA Century of Geography at Stellenbosch University 1920-2020 focuses on the establishment and development of geography as an academic discipline at Stellenbosch, South Africa’s founding geography department. The ways in which the department currently operates are deemed fundamentally joined to its past and pave the way for the evolution of geography and its various subdisciplines going forward. The investigation seeks to highlight the development of the discipline and its institutionalisation as part of the academic offerings of the university, while providing details about the teaching and research conducted, as well as of the people who contributed to these endeavours. It also furnishes the academic geography community at Stellenbosch, and geography more broadly, with some insights into its past development and more recent changes, along with a complete bibliography of conducted research.
- ItemChanging spaces: Writing centres and access to higher education(SUN PRESS, 2011) Archer, Arlene; Richards, RoseINTRODUCTION: Nowadays most tertiary institutions in South Africa boast a writing centre, some of them more than one. University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and University of Cape Town (UCT) have a general writing centre each and also a Law writing centre, for example. Most of the writing centres are permanent fixtures and many have permanent staff. This book serves to outline differing theoretical approaches to writing which underpin the various centres, as well as differing implementation of some of these theories in particular social and political contexts. It showcases writing centres from seven institutions in South Africa and reflects on practices in these differing contexts. It situates all of this in terms of some of the tensions writing centres around the world experience, such as the relation between the generic and the discipline-specific in teaching writing, the extent to which writing centres need to engage with the increasingly multimodal requirements in student assignments, the placement of writing centres in institutions, and degrees of perceived legitimacy and authority. The unique South African context shows the significance of these issues in sharp relief.

- ItemEcriture et Standardisation des Langues Gabonaises(SUN MeDIA, 2010) Hubert, Jacques; Mavoungou, Paul AchilleEcriture et Standardisation des Langues Gabonaises addresses the language situation in Gabon, which is reflective of the state of many African languages in general. Specific issues discussed include the alphabet and writing, orthography, challenges faced in terms of the standardisation of Gabonese languages, phonology, as well as graphic representation. It enriches the debate on the development of minority languages and cultures which run the risk of extinction without an established system of writing these languages in terms of alphabet and phonetics.
- ItemEducating citizen designers in South Africa(AFRICAN SUN MeDIA, 2018) Costandius, Elmarie; Botes, HermanEducating Citizen Designers in South Africa is the first book of its kind to appear in post-apartheid South Africa and it is therefore both overdue and extremely welcome. The book aims at sharing critical citizenship design teaching and learning pedagogies by including contributions from a range of design educators, and one student, who work in different design disciplines, such as architecture, graphic and product design. Critical citizenship education is explicated in relation to a range of theories and new and existing models. Numerous contemporary case studies and examples of design projects from a range of South African Higher Education Institutions are included. As such, a variety of perspectives emerge, including the consensual, where the aim of critical citizenship education is viewed as promoting social justice, shared values and critical thinking, to the conflicting – where critiques are levelled against conceptions of critical citizenship education. Contentious, contesting and contradictory views are inevitable and necessary given the South African context as it is only in open debate that the one point of agreement among the authors, the need for social change, can be worked towards. - Prof Deirdre Pretorius, Univeristy of Johannesburg

- ItemFilm criticism in Cape Town 1928-1930: An explorative investigation into the Cape Times and Die Burger(SUN PReSS, 2005) Eckardt, MichaelThis study is the revised version of my thesis, submitted at the University of Stellenbosch to obtain the degree Master of Philosophy of Journalism. The decision to publish this thesis stems from various recommendations because of the significant lack of fundamental studies concerning early South African film history. Conducted as an attempt to provide contextual background for a more comprehensive study on the reception of German films in South Africa in the years 1928 – 1933, the study aims to provide further research with the necessary basic data and a general statement on the use value of film reviews in newspapers. The only way to avoid the danger of using the few secondary sources over and over again was the return to the original film reviews published in the daily newspapers Die Burger and the Cape Times in the period under discussion. The result is a list of film titles which is supposed to give an unabridged overview of the films screened in Cape Town 1928 to 1930.1 Due to the functionalist character of this survey, the given conclusions remain rather descriptive, sometimes speculative, and point out the necessity for more probing studies. In the present case, this study presents itself as an invitation to others to use the collected material as one possible point of departure for further investigations.
- ItemGender and sexuality in South African music(SUN ePReSS, 2005) Walton, Chris, 1963-; Muller, StephanusBOOK BLURB: For many years now, the manner in which gender and sexuality impinge upon musical creativity has been a focus of mainstream debate in Europe and the USA. This book, based on the papers of a conference organized by the University of Pretoria, is nevertheless the first of its kind to tackle these issues in a specifically South African context. How is it, for example, that a white, gay composer could during apartheid write cantatas glorifying the same nationalist society that deemed him to be perverse? What role did gender play in the career of the premier Afrikaner woman composer of her day, whose success was matched only by the ridicule she inspired amongst her peers? And to what extent can gendered and sexualized hierarchies be discemed in African popular and indigenous music? These and many other questions are addressed, ranging from the straight and narrow to the queer and wide. The result is a book that is invigorating, even at times uncomfortable: a frank, scholarly, full-frontal portrait of a hithero ignored, but vital area of South African music theory.
- ItemAn industry study of the utilisation of public R&D(SUN PReSS, 2005) Bailey, Tracy; Loots, Gerrit; Wildschut, LaurenThis series of publications is the result of research conducted at the Centre for Research on Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University. Volume 3.
- ItemIntroduction to social work(Lanzo, 1999) Engelbrecht, Lambert K.PREFACE: This book provides an insight: the capacity of understanding hidden truths (The Concise Oxford Dictionary). This implies that the nature and dynamics of contemporary social work in South Africa is defined in terms of a developmentally orientated paradigm, so as to adapt to existing tendencies and perspectives. Because the total field of social work is so comprehensive, only an overview of this insight will be provided.
- Item#Journalism 4.0@ Stellenbosch : Journalism Department's forty years = Joernalistiek 4.0@Stellenbosch : Departement Joernalistiek se veertig jaar(AFRICAN SUN MeDIA, 2018) Rabe, LizetteStellenbosch University’s Department of Journalism celebrates its 40th anniversary with this publication reflecting on the four decades between 1978 and 2018 and all that happened behind 26 Crozier Street’s front door. But, in essence, it celebrates a lot more. It is an assessment of the importance of the media’s essential role in a democracy. This collection of essays, therefore, is a celebration of the inalienable right of freedom of expression, especially in the form of media freedom.

Roux(SUN MeDIA, 2012) Ndinga-Koumba-Binza, Hugues Steve; Bosch, Sonja E.BOOK BLURB: This book provides a broad overview of current work on South African languages, language resources and language technologies. While it provides a fairly comprehensive overview, it also ties together the most recent knowledge state here, and is therefore truly innovative … The book is therefore informed by current international trends in the respective fields of science, and feeds back into them … There is absolutely no doubt that the book has an academic peer audience and is directed at specialists in the field.
- ItemLexicographie et Confection des Dictionnaires au Gabon(SUN MeDIA, 2010) Mavoungou, Paul AchilleIn this book Dr. Mavoungou focuses on dictionary making in Gabon, but he does it within a clearly-defined theoretical framework. His outline of the Yilumbu language and the lexicographic activities in Gabon serves as a valuable background for the discussion that follows. And his account of the theoretical framework and basic elements of lexicography can be regarded as a very useful introduction to core aspects of metalexicography.
- ItemModern state development, capacity, and institutions(SUN MeDIA, 2017) Lambrechts, Derica; Fourie, PieterThis book makes an important original conceptual and theoretical contribution to our understanding of modern state development, the role of the state, and the South African transition to democracy. Its focus on related concepts such as state capacity, political trust and tolerance adds to insights on the dynamics of political and democratic transitions. Furthermore, the selected focus areas as well as the comparative approach add new insights into the peculiarities of the South African transition, state development, state capacity and state institutions. Its focus on societal dynamics and state-society relations is a significant contribution.
- ItemMusic and identity : transformation and negotiation(AFRICAN SUN MeDIA, 2007) Akrofi, E. A. (Eric Ayisi); Smit, Maria; Thorsen, Stig-MagnusBOOK BLURB: Significant political and social changes worldwide have affected music life and the role of music in society. A group of scholars from Nordic countries and from Southern Africa became interested in analysing this process and formed a research network focusing various musics' relation to individual and social indentities. This volume is the result of the Swedish South African Research Network (SSARN) that started in 2002. the unique approach is an underlying debate in the network on how different scholars have interpreted concepts as identity, musical encounters, values, and authenticity. Thus, researchers with different professional backgrounds and theoretical and methodological approaches juxtapose various concepts of identity and its relation to music and musicians. This volume broadens the concepts to include identities, which are fragmented, dislocated, repressed, modernised, liberated, chosen, and narrated. The transformation and negotiation of identities lie within the multiplicities of contrasts and nuances, which unfold in our contemporary environment. It entails processess as diverse as localisation and globalisation, appropriation and assimilation, Westernisation and Africanisation. Musicians have to transform and negotiate their identities within a continuum that includes indigenous elements, traditional beliefs, and customs, versus city living and modernity containing hybrid forms of musics and arts. Music can in the sense be instrumental in empowering and enlightening individuals and groups, but can also hamper the development of human relations. This volume offers 25 essays, written from different theoretical and methodological perspectives, in which the authors grapple with issues of music and identity in order to open interest for and on-going academic discussion on this topic.
