- ItemA human resource management programme for social workers at psychiatric hospitals(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1996-12) Hendry, Anna Elizabeth; Botha, N. J.; Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study investigated the need for a human resource management programme for social workers at psychiatric hospitals. The emphasis was on gaining access to and exploiting optimal specialist knowledge and skills. The motivation for the study has been the new challenges brought about by rationalisation of health and 'welfare services due to budget limitations and the 1996 White Paper for Social Welfare's call for more effective and equitable service delivery. Due to management cut-backs and restructuring of services, the prospects for satisfying extrinsic needs of staff, for example, by means of salary increases and promotion options, are poor. It thus becomes the task of the social work manager to activate potentially committed staff members by means of satisfying their higher intrinsic needs such as for example the need for autonomy and greater responsibility. A literature study was undertaken to explore and describe the relatJonship between the administrative, educational and supportive functions of human resource management and supervision within the framework of the development model. Data for the empirical study was collected by means of. self-administered questionnaires completed by the social workers at the three psychiatric hospitals in the Western Cape namely, Valkenberg, Lentegeur and Stikland. The needs of social workers and the tasks of the manager were investigated and described. Guidelines for a human resource management programme were determined according to the research findings in terms of staff acquisition, staff development and training, staff utilisation and evaluation. Findings also indicated the need for a shift from a control to a more participative and commitment paradigm.

Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Drug abuse and drug dependence, especially with regard to dagga and Mandrax, is a distressing phenomenon in the current South African society. Because of an increase in this phenomenon, that is the combined use of dagga and Mandrax, there is a growing need to treat this social problem as effectively as possible. The study deals with the social worker's rendering of help to the dagga- and Mandrax user. The purpose of the study is to compile guide-lines with regard to assessing the needs of social workers. A questionnaire survey was done by social workers actively involved in family organisations to assess their needs for knowledge and skills in working with the druguser. Pre-graduate training as well as insufficient furhter training after graduation add to social worker's limited knowledge and skills in working with the druguser. Social workers are largely emphatic and supportive towards the druguser, but they do however experience feeling of uncertainty, powerlessness, ambivalance and resignation. Although quite motivated in rendering help to the druguser, the social worker's motivation rests mainly on the druguser's motivation to change his own behaviour and to co-operate. The majority of respondents' needs with regard to knowledge and skills were highly indicated. Although the family-care worker does not specialise in dependence it is nevertheless necessary that she has sufficient knowledge and skills with regard to dependence. Her attitude towards the druguser and toward the phenomenon of dependence is therefore important in rendering help effectively. Guide-lines were compiled and suggestions were made to ensure that the social worker's tasks is more sufficient.
- Item'n Maatskaplikewerk-hulpverleningsprogram vir volwasse brandwondpasiente wat alkohol misbruik(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1992) Steenkamp, Wilhelmina Carolina; Botha, N. Department of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to design a treatment program for burn patients who abuse alcohol. To achieve this a literature study was done on the psycho-social support of burn patients and on substance abuse counselling. An empirical study was designed to determine the prevalence of alcohol dependence in patients at the burns unit of the Tygerberg Hospital and to describe patterns of alcohol consumption, socio-economic adjustment and attitudes towards drinking. The subjects of the study were patients over the age of eighteen years who were admitted consecutively to the burns unit between 21 March 1992 and 19 June 1992. During this period 79 patients were admitted. Twenty-six were excluded from the study because of early discharge (eleven patients), language problems (five patients) and deaths (ten patients). The remaining 53 patients were screened for alcohol problems using the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (Selzer 1971). Thirty patients screened positively for alcoholism. A more comprehensive interview schedule was administered to these patients to obtain additional information. Questionnaires were utilized to obtain information on the existing treatment facilities for alcohol dependent clients in the Western Cape. The most important results from this study were as follows. The incidence of alcohol dependence in the study group was high. Most patients indicated that they were regular weekend drinkers. More than half of the patients reported previous alcohol-related accidents and many patients attributed their present burn injury to alcohol intoxication. The study group can be described as socio-economically deprived. It was also found that the burn injury represents a crisis during which treatment for alcohol problems can be introduced. The proposed treatment program is based on the literature study and on the findings of the empirical study. Individual couselling and groupwork is combined in an integrated program. The program represents a minimal intervention strategy aimed at attitude and behaviour change.

Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Social Work Supervision is an indirect service to provide an effective and goal-achieving service. The supervisor enhances the knowledge, skill and attitude of the supervisee and thereby enables him to meet the demands for accountability. To assure effective supervision, requires policy for social work supervision. The goal of this study was to examine how social work supervision was done in the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services and to determine whether policy for social work supervision exists. This study was also aimed at providing the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services, Western-Cape with guidelines for the development of policy for social work supervision. The study focused on the structure, goal and function of the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services. The development, services and integration of the Department of Social Work in the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services was explored. Medical services is the primary function of the hospital and social work services therefore fulfill a supplementary role in the hospital. A description has been given of the knowledge and skill the social worker will need about the hospital in which he is working, the people whom he helps, the problems he has to deal with, the process through which help is given and the application of himself as an instrument. The goal, function, nature and demands of supervision was studied. The supervisors' administrative-, educational- and supportive functions have been discribed and this brought forward the requirements and responsibilities of the supervisors. The educational function of the supervisor provide the basis for supervision and refers to the use of an educational model, -evaluation and -program for each social worker. The supervisor should be able to utilize both methods of supervision and be capable of doing supervision by contract Selection criteria should be applied and training in supervision should be made compulsary. Policy for social work supervision should be formulated and implemented. This study indicates the process whereby policy should be developed, describe the aspects of concern when policy is implemented and stipulate how policy should be evaluated. If these suggestions are taken into account when policy for social work supervision is drawn up, the policy could be used as a guideline for supervision services.
- ItemThe psychosocial implications of a heart transplant for a patient(Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1992) Barr, Lynette Salome Patricia; Botha, N. J.; Stellenbosch University. Department of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study, research was undertaken to investigate the psychosocial implications of a heart transplant for a recipient. Seventeen recipients were personally interviewed by means of a questionnaire for this study when they attended the heart transplant clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital. Included in this sample were a twelve year old youth, as well as a recipient who had received his transplant as early as 1971. The questionnaire was compiled from information obtained via international literature. The literature reveals that a heart transplantation is a traumatic experience for a recipient. This form of surgical therapy cannot be viewed in a purely clinical light for it affects both the social and emotional spheres of the recipient's life. His employment situation is radically altered and his financial situation is usually adversely affected. He experiences role reversals in his family life or in his relationships, and his marital and sexual relationships are also affected. Immediately prior to and after the operation the emotions which he experiences are greatly heightened. Attention was also focused on the multi-disciplinary team approach which involves the recipient in an attempt to improve the quality of the services rendered to him. This study shows that the rehabilition potential of most of tile recipients is good. Generally their lifespan is appreciably extended, and they have a renewed interest in living productivity and meaningful lives. The aim of the heart transplant is to re-endow the recipient with a normal quality of life. They experience a renewed sense of vigour, enjoyment and richness of life: qualities which had been absent since their illness. Despite the fact that the psychosocial demands made on the recipient are at times, intense, the end result of this operation indicates a definite improvement in his quality of life. It can thus be emphatically stated that the recipient receives the 'gift of life" when he receives a new heart.

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: School social work has been part of the services rendered to schools in the Western Cape province for the past 13 years. This service, however, was not equally available to all schools and learners. In addition to this, services are being rendered by four different systems in a diverse way. The aim of this study is to develop guidelines for the effective management of school social work services in the Western Cape province. The underlying goal to this study is to explore in which system school social work should be structured as part of an Education Support Service. A literature study and its practical application lead to the conclusion that school social work is a specialist field. The fact that school social work and education share common goals, serves to confirm the structuring of school social work within the education system. From a description of the existing state of school social work in the Western Cape province, it becomes evident that the diverse nature of the service is the result of the differences in its management. The unification of the different school social work systems therefore seems to be a priority in the creation of a service which can be accountable in every way. On the grounds of the established fact that school social work should be structured as a unit within the Western Cape Education Department, the compatability of the management administrations of social work and education was investigated. It was concluded that both these services could be grouped under the concept human service organization and thus share a common management administration. From the caracteristics of a human service organization's structural framework, an empirical investigation was conducted as to the way school social work is being managed as a unit within the Western Cape Education Department. According to the description of the style of management, interpretations were made on the basis of applications from existing literature. By means of this descriptive and applied research methods, the conclusion was reached that the characteristics of the management of a human service organization are not adhered to with regard to school social work services within the Directorate: Para- Edicational Service. It was also found that the management of school social work is ineffective. On the basis of these conclusions, recommendations were made regarding the structuring of school social work within the Western Cape province, as well as on a national level. The way in which such structuring should be implemented is formulated in the recommendation regarding guidelines which were developed for the effective management of school social work in the Western Cape Province.
