ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Recording quality is influenced by small changes in the distance relationships between a microphone and a projecting sound source. The choice of microphone as well as microphone and sound source positions are determined by means of experimentation where small adaptations of a recording setup are exercised until an aesthetically pleasing recording result is achieved. This thesis investigates a system design for the accurate mapping of microphone positions relative to a sound source in any three-dimensional space. With the aim to develop a positional map and recall system, the aspects influencing recording quality were regarded as technical requirements that guided the research of mapping methods. It was found that the retrieval of positional information from photographic mapping and photogrammetric modelling techniques were too complex or inaccurate to be considered for implementation. Therefor a cartesian coordinate system has been adapted for the mapping and recalling of previous microphone and sound source positions.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Opnamegehalte word deur die geringste verandering in die afstandverhouding tussen ’n mikrofoon en ’n klankbron beïnvloed. Die posisie van ’n klankbron, asook die mikrofoonkeuse en plasing wat vir ’n opstelling benut word, word in die opnamepraktyk op ’n eksperimentele basis aangepas totdat ’n opstelling ’n esteties bevredigende resultaat lewer. Hierdie tesis ondersoek die ontwerp van ’n stelsel vir die akkurate kartering van mikrofoonposisies relatief tot ’n klankbron in enige driedimensionele ruimte. Ten einde ’n karteringstelsel vir opname-ateljees te ontwikkel, is die aspekte wat opnamegehalte beïnvloed as tegniese vereistes geag waarvolgens karteringstegnieke ondersoek en aangepas is. Daar is bevind dat die afleiding van posisionele inligting vanaf fotografies karteerde en fotogrammetries gemoddelleerde ruimtes te onakkuraat of ingewikkeld is om vir implementering oorweeg te word. Gevolglik is ’n kartetiese-koördinaatsisteem vir die kartering van mikrofoon- en bronposisies ontwikkel.
