Abstract
The aim of this article is to determine the nature of substance abuse amongst young adult offenders in prison as a first step in the evaluative research method to develop a suitable rehabilitation programme. The research has been conducted in one section of 115 male inmates at Pollsmoor Command Area. Eighty six respondents completed the questionnaire. Some of the most important findings are as follows: (a) the average age of these respondents is 20,4 years; (b) 92% of them used various kinds of drugs of which dagga (38%) and alcohol (30%) were the most popular; (c) one fifth of the group not only abused these drugs, but also display symptoms of addiction; and (d) although only three respondents have been sentenced for direct drug-related offences, almost half of them (42%) have committed a violent crime where, according to literature, alcohol or drugs may have played a significant role. Thus prison authorities have a major rehabilitative role to play and the feasibility of a special 'drug unit' within the prison will be further researched.
