Article

This article examines Sheila Cussons’s verses about poetry and being a poet in which, firstly, the mystical and secondly, the contemplative form the foundation. For Cussons writing poetry is a divine command. Her struggle to find clarity about the nature of God is the central driving force in her poetry. Van Aardt (1990:179) calls her the first Afrikaans poet who links her artistry to finding God: many of her poems are an expression of her search and longing for God and it is not strange that the mystical experience is such an integral part of many of her poems.
