Abstract
The study in question was an attempt to shed light on aspects of the self concept with regard to the indigent adolescent girl in a child care school. Ninety-seven white English and Afrikaans speaking girls were tested, Their average age was 17, 25 years. They came mainly from a lower socio-economic background. The variable that were examined with regard to a possible relation between self concept were intellectual ability, length of residence in a child care school and academic achievement. The investigation was narrowed down to differentiate between smokers and non-smokers in order to determine differences between the two groups with regard to personality traits, self concept, intellectual ability and academic achievements.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die onderhawige studie was 'n poging om aspekte van die selfkosep ten opsigte van die sorgbehoewende adolessente meisie in die kindersorgskool te belig. Die toetslinge was 97 Engels- en Afrikaanssprekende blanke meisies. Hulle mediaan-ouderdom was 17, 25 jaar. Hulle was oorwegend afkomstig uit 'n laer sosio-ekonomiese milieu. Vir die identifisering van rokers (n=69) en nie-rokers (n=28) is 'n selfopgestelde vraelys gerbuik. Die veranderlikes wat ondersoek is met betrekking tot 'n moontlike verband met die selfkonsep was intellektuele vermoë, tydperk van verblyf in die kindersorgskool en akademiese prestasie. Die verskil ten opsigte van persoonlikheidseienskappe van rokers en nie-rokers, asook die verskil ten opsigte van selfkonsep, intellektuele vermoë en akademiese prestasie tussen die betrokke subgroepe is ook ondersoek.
