Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the dissertation is to examine the role of food as part of the regional policy of South Africa. The use of food as an element of destabilisation or interdependence in South Africa's regional policy is the central theme of this thesis. To establish a factual basis for the hypothesis of the dissertation the policy instruments implemented by South Africa in its regional policy are analised. Dynamic variables like negative growth rates in food production and demographic tendencies e.g. population growth are evaluated against the background of regional political events. The schools of thought concerning the use of food as a political instrument in Southern Africa are examined and the theory of destabilisation of Geldenhuys (1982) is operationalized.
