Abstract
In the present South African context it is essential that the potential of each individual be developed to the full. This is a development commencing with the self-concept of the individual and forms the basis for the development of a more complex personality structure. The strengthening of a positive self-concept and the development of learners' maximum potential, present an immense challenge to the school in its capacity as an important support system of the child, especially with regard to the quality of teaching and education. In order to attain this aim, it is essential that more knowledge be acquired of the unique personality composition of the child in order to contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of their individual differences and needs. The primary aim of this investigation is to determine the relationship between the primary school learners' characteristic personality type preferences and the unique nature of their self-concept. At the same time possible differences between the personality type preferences and the self-concept of boys and girls were investigated. The field of research consisted of a group of 345 learners, attached to an Afrikaans medium primary school in the Western Cape, representative of the Coloured population group. In order to achieve this purpose two measure instruments have been used, namely the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSCS) for the evaluation of self-concept and the "Murphy-Meisgeier Persoonlikheidsvraelys vir Kinders (MMvK) ", for the evaluation of personality types. The MMvK represents the Afrikaans version of the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children (MMTIC), and is based upon the personality theory of Carl Jung. The most important finding of this investigation is that there is a significant relation between the personality type preferences of learners and their self-concept, indicating an equally significant relation between introversion and a low self-concept. The implications of the acquisition of more knowledge with regard to personality type preferences and the self-concept of learners in the teaching and educational situation, and the consequential relation between introversion and a low self-concept are discussed.
