Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The social worker, as part of the managerial team in die Department of Correctional Services, must be able to render services to, and support the correctional officer, who has been exposed to a incident of violence. To be a source of support to the correctional officer, the social worker must be aware of the exposure of the officer to violence inside the workplace, the impact of this violence on his person and his need for support by the social worker and management. This exploratory study endeavours to create a scientifically based framework for the social worker to render services to and support the correctional officer who has been exposed to an incident of violence. The correctional officer's exposure to violence in his workplace, the impact of the violence on his person and his need for support were determined and described by means of questionnaires. The respondents were 3 7 correctional officers from Brandvlei Maximum Prison. Conclusions and recomendations were made which focused, amongst others, on the knowledge of the prevalence of violence inside the prison, support to the victim, guidance programmes, employers assistance programmes and defusing of the victim. The framework of this research can be utilised by social workers and management in the Department of Correctional Services in the handling of the correctional officer who has been exposed to violence and to act proactively to prevent the exposure of the officer to violence.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die maatskaplike werker, as deel van die bestuurspan in <liens van die Departement van Korrektiewe Dienste, moet in staat wees om die korrektiewe beampte te ondersteun om toepaslike dienste te lewer wanneer die beampte blootgestel word aan 'n voorval van geweld. Ten einde hierdie ondersteuning te bied, moet die maatskaplike werker bewus wees van die beampte se blootstelling aan geweld, die impak van die geweld op horn as persoon en sy behoefte aan hulpverlening deur die maatskaplike werker en die bestuur. Hierdie verkennende studie het ten doel om 'n wetenskaplik · gefundeerde raamwerk daar te stel vir hulpverlening en ondersteuning deur die maatskaplike werker aan die korrektiewe beampte wat blootgestel is aan geweld. Die korrektiewe beampte se blootstelling aan geweld binne sy werksplek, die impak daarvan op horn en sy behoeftes ten opsigte van maatskaplikewerk hulpverlening is deur middel van vraelyste bepaal en beskryf. Die respondente het uit 3 7 korrektiewe beamptes bestaan wat werksaam is by Brandvlei Maksimum Gevangenis. Gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings is gemaak wat onder andere fokus op die kennis van die voorkoms van geweld binne die gevangenis, hulpverlening aan die slagoffer, voorligtingsprogramme, personeelbystandsprogramme en ontlonting. Die raamwerk van hierdie navorsingsverslag sal deur maatskaplike werkers en die bestuur in die Departement van Korrektiewe Dienste benut kan word in die hantering van die korrektiewe beampte wat blootgestel is aan geweld en dit kan moontlik aanleiding gee tot proaktiewe optrede ten einde hierdie blootstelling te verhoed.
