Abstract
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research focused on the correlation between career interest and personality as well as making optimal use of psychometric data within a local context. The following questionnaires were used: Meyer-Interest Questionnaire (MB10) and the South -African Personality Questionnaire (SAPQ). The target population was the 1994 and 1995 first year students (N = 4348) who completed the first year orientation program. There were statistically significant correlations between some of the interest fields as measured by the MB10 and some of the personality dimensions as measured by the SAPQ. However these correlations were consistently low and there was not enough scientific evidence to make any meaningful inferences about an individual's personality based on career interest or vice versa. The interest profiles of the different course groups differed significantly from one another. The same result was not found for the personality profiles of the different courses. The complexity of the relationship between personality and interest makes further research on this issue necessary.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om vas te stel of daar op grond van 'n persoon se belangstellingsprofiel afleidings oor daardie persoon se persoonlikheidsprofiel gemaak kan word. In hierdie ondersoek word gefokus op die moontlike verbande tussen belangstelling en persoonlikheid en die optimale be nutting van psigometrie binne 'n plaaslike konteks. Die meetinstrumente wat vir hierdie doel gebruik was is die Meyer Belangstellingsvraelys (MB10) en die Suid-Afrikaanse Persoonlikheidsvraelys (SAPV). Die data van die 1994 en 1995 eerstejaarstudente (N=4348) wat die orienteringsprogram voltooi het, is gebruik. Eerstens is daar gefokus op moontlike verbande binne die totale groep. Tweedens is daar gefokus op die verbande binne sekere kursusgroepe. Die resultate het getoon dat daar wei statisties beduidende verbande tussen enkele belangstellingsvelde en persoonlikheidsdimensies voorkom. Die korrelasies is deurgaans baie laag en daar is te min wetenskaplike gronde om op grond van 'n persoon se belangstellingsprofiel definitiewe afleidings oor sy persoonlikheid te maak en omgekeerd. Daar is beduidende verskille tussen die belangstellingsprofiele van die onderskeie kursusgroepe gevind. Geen beduidende verskille is tussen die onderskeie kursusgroepe se persoonlikheidsprofiele gevind nie. Die kompleksiteit van die interaksie tussen persoonlikheid en belangstelling noodsaak egter verdere navorsing oor hierdie aangeleenthede.
