Children more commonly present with protein energy malnutrition (PEM) at diagnosis of cancer in developing countries than in developed countries, depending on the type of cancer and extent of the disease. PEM at cancer diagnosis is associated with delays in treatment, increased infections and a negative outcome. There is still controversy regarding the ideal criteria to use to describe PEM, as there are many methods and cut-off points.
